12.12 is a huge date for e-commerce in Indonesia. Officially known as Harbolnas in Indonesia, it’s the nation’s biggest eCommerce shopping event with around 300 participating e-commerce stores and marketplaces.
Similar to the successes of Singles’ Day or Black Friday, it will be a period of huge discounts and promotions. Organisers are expecting sales to reach Rp 7 trillion (US$ 482 million) over the coming weekend, 5 times higher than the daily gross market value (GMV).
Harbolnas’ name is derived from ‘Hari Belanja Online Nasional’ – meaning National Online Shopping Day in Bahasa Indo. Usually held on only one day, this year’s Harbolnas will be held for 2 days. The 11th of December will focus on promoting local Indonesian products, while discounts and promotions for international brands and products will be on the 12th itself.
The first Harbolnas was held in 2012 through the collaboration of a handful of Indonesia’s biggest marketplaces and eCommerce stores. The aim is to encourage Indonesian consumers to shop online, with the idea that if many Indonesian stores collaborate rather than compete, they garner even greater sales results.
