Janio Collaborates with MDEC: Driving Digital Transformation of Malaysia’s SMEs

Janio has been appointed as Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation Sdn Bhd’s (MDEC) cross-border eCommerce initiative partner to aid in driving Malaysia’s National eCommerce Strategic Roadmap (NESR). To this end, Janio is working with MDEC to help Malaysian small-medium enterprises grow abroad by providing cross-border logistics solution to help ship their products throughout Southeast Asia.

Developed in 1996 as the government of Malaysia’s response to the new concept of the “Digital Economy”, MDEC is working to drive digital transformation and adoption across the public and private sectors in Malaysia, including small-medium enterprises (SMEs). MDEC aims to connect, catalyse and commercialise digital initiatives to advance a thriving and sustainable digital economy for Malaysia.

To that end, MDEC has been working hard to drive Malaysia’s digital transformation. Their efforts in driving the National eCommerce Strategic Roadmap and onboarding more Malaysian SMEs onto the Malaysian Digital Free Trade Zone (DFTZ).

The DFTZ is an electronic world trade platform designed to facilitate exports for Malaysian SMEs by providing platforms, e-fulfilment activities and enhanced trade facilitation measures. Janio’s network within the DFTZ enables Malaysian SMEs exports to reach their international customers.

The collaboration between MDEC and Janio supports two major aims of the NESR: accelerating Malaysian seller adoption of eCommerce and promoting national brands abroad to boost cross-border eCommerce. The NESR aims to grow Malaysia’s eCommerce contribution to GDP to around RM211 billion in 2020.

These initiatives come at the perfect time. Southeast Asia has been a hotbed for eCommerce growth lately, with the region’s gross merchandise value of eCommerce goods sales hitting USD 39 billion in 2019 and expected to reach USD 153 billion in 2025, according to a Google, Temasek and Bain & Company’s 2019 e-Conomy SEA report.

Helping Malaysian SMEs prepare themselves to ride this wave could push Malaysia’s digital economy to new heights. To reach these goals, MDEC and Janio have been working on multiple initiatives, including promoting and marketing eCommerce to SMEs.

Janio’s support goes beyond just providing cross-border shipping services to Malaysian merchants. Janio has been participating in, and jointly-organising events aimed at bringing more Malaysian businesses onto eCommerce and onto the DFTZ.

At these events, Janio has been sharing insights to enhance merchants’ use of cross-border eCommerce, such as highlighting the export potential of local products to international markets and how to capitalize on these opportunities. These events include the Sarawak eCommerce Forum, Karnival Inovasi ICT Terengganu and a recent event on 31st October in Kuala Lumpur called “Let’s Go Global: Making it Big in Indonesia via eCommerce.”

Janio has also been linking Malaysian SMEs and eCommerce merchants to their range of eCommerce partners such as JDID and Avana. By connecting merchants to these partners, Malaysia’s merchants can obtain a comprehensive list of tools and expertise across the entire ecosystem from international market entry to international online marketplace listings, and more.

Carol Fung, Head of SME Adoption at MDEC mentioned, “Janio has been a big help in executing SME adoption programs to drive the NESR forward, particularly in helping merchants access international markets like Indonesia.”

“We’re looking forward to collaborating with MDEC to help more businesses expand into cross-border eCommerce.” said Syed Ali Ridha Madihid, Chief Operating Officer of Janio Asia.

Janio is committed to helping MDEC enhance Malaysia’s businesses and trade through growing their international eCommerce capabilities.
